To add.  Was doing exactly this for a friend only a few days ago.  
Very vintage PC.  Yes, I encourge re-cycling and most of them do not 
need anything faster than 400Mhz PII (speed kills and corrupts) :-))

Since PCI cards will grab some IRQ automatically, you may want to 
check all the functions.  This PC assigned all PCI devices to one IRQ 
and things were acting strange.  

BIOS was accesible, so I spread the wealth a bit and all was fine.  
Some mobos will allow each PCI slot to be assigned its unique IRQ, 
others seem to do it in groups of two.
