replacement or upgrade hardware (especially a new hard drive) come
from the manufacturer of the computer, also?

Chuck, I was so busy laughing about how you quoted me with-out using
any of my own words, (paraphrased me?), that I missed your question until
Gaffer quoted the whole thing back in his reply... (Opps...)

I have not personally replaced a HD in a Dell since 1994, so my experence
on that is a little dated... That is why I asked them if there was a manual,
and if they read it...

I like OTC parts... I hate getting sucker punched by a maker just because he
made it different enough tobe able to bleed me to death...
If I came across a Dell (that needed a HD), I would stick in something that
was around here (at least the same size or bigger) and see what happened...
If I liked it, I would likely clone it to a new drive...
This assumes the Dell will not use the WPA that I am used to, and therefore
ignore the Volume ID of the HD... (xxxx-xxxx)

Even when I "do" my own systems, (Full-XP-Pro, OEM-"small boxes") I
sometimes take three or four tries at it until I am happy with the results...
(After that though, I keep them running till the HD litterally dies with no OS
re-installs or formats...
(I'm not happy until it is stable, and/or the base install is just the way I
like it...
