If you know the dialup access # & the DNS server ip address then no one
ever need to use any one else's front end other than Windows. FWIW most if
not all ISPs provide this information at or shortly after one signs up.
Are you talking about accessing People PC without having to install their
software? Just in case you are, here are my comments:
I have two lists of ISP's on my wall for all of my customers to see. The
Good and the Bad. On the bad list are the ISP's that require you to install
their software to access their service via dial-up. They are, (but not
limited to) AOL, Wal*Mart Net, CompuServe, Gateway.net, Juno, Net Zero, and
guess who just got moved from my Good list to my Bad list? People PC!
If a ISP will allow a dial-up connection without installing their software,
they are on my Good list. For years we could dial into People PC, connect
and use our browser, mail client etc. without installing their software.
Lately we can not. We put the email address and password into the Windows
Dialer, dial in to People PC and it connects with no problem. The problem is
when we try to access the internet with our browser or mail client all we
get is a prompt to download and install the People PC software. This trap
moved People PC from my Good list to my Bad list.
We know the reason many ISP's offer freedom to use their service without the
requirement to install their software and others do not. It is the same
commercial greed and advertising schemes that make most new computers a
billboard for many advertisers and some computers have clean installs of
their operating system.
Some speak up for the idea of eye candy and other things that make ISP's
easy to use. I could live with their offers of automatic transmissions (ease
of use screens with many offers and the ads to pad their profit margins) in
their vehicles, IF they provided standard shift (direct access via Windows
dialer etc.) vehicles for those who prefer to bypass the junk.
If most people eagerly accept new computers loaded to the hilt with junk,
why be any different when selecting an ISP?
