I am using on Windows XP SP2 with both Outlook Express and Office 11
Outlook. My OE version is:
X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527

>From Office 11 Outlook I sent "myself" a message in HTML format to my OE
mailbox.

I clicked Reply in OE while reading that message. My OE Send options
include
"Reply to message in format in which it was sent"
  "Include message in reply"

My message compose window showed this:

  This is a test.

  Of HTML E-mail.

At this point, I am free to press the down arrow or click the mouse to move
my blinking cursor down into the Original Message section, and simply start
typing. Bam! My typing is being mixed into the previous message's html.

Question was not complete: Agreed.

Ummm... I should be able to figure this out then, but didn't/can't.

(I did figure out - you are using X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook 11,
so there are some things I can figure out for myself... <grin>)

I wonder if typing "mix in" is good enough for the help file, or if
MicroSpeak uses different terms... (Nope, no good.)

This is me: X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2670
I know you guys that use the "big brother" version of that will have
to work a lot harder to see that in my headers than me, which is one
reason (of many) I stayed with it...
