Use of SATA drive to boot is a function of the motherboard and BIOS Whatever motherboard you have - check the BIOS options I have worked on systems where: The system checked for any bootable device and partition on all possible connections, Only specific devices (channel and connection id ) were checked CD, DVD, A-drive, Floppy and/or Firewire, LAN, USB connected memory sticks or drives etc.could be included in the list of devices to check It just depends on what your system will do, and let you specify/exclude

I'd suggest that, you check if the BIOS will allow you to specify the SATA drive in the boot device list, and if so then, if you get a SATA drive ( SATA 1 or 2 150, or 300 rated according to the motherboard capability then if possible copy the OS from your PATA drive to a 20GB(minimum) primary partition on the SATA drive and see if you can get the system to boot from it. You should experience a substantial increase in throughput I presume that you have the drive with the boot partition on channel 0 cable, and the other drive - with the CD/DVD on the second cable And - being picky SATA is IDE, it is just using a Serial cable to connect to the drive, as opposed to a parallel cable. Then more considerations:.. add-on USB connected external drive, or add-on SATA connected external drive or add-in SATA connected internal drive or add-on USB connected case with a PATA IDE drive in the case JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chuck Andrews" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 25, 2006 1:15 PM Subject: Re: SATA Question > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Hugh Gundersen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Saturday, March 25, 2006 3:34 AM > Subject: Re: SATA Question > > > > > YES but I would suggest that you also load the driver software just in > > case you ever get a SATA Hdd > > and want to install it. > > With my Asus motherboards I have never been given a prompt to install SATA > drivers and I use SATA hard drives exclusively now.
