Depends which modem you get. Locally, Verizon issues a modem that
runs PPPoE in the modem itself. Hence the DSL setup is like a cable
modem.

If you get a friendly guy, who half-way knows what he is doing (at
the Telco end), you do not have to install any software.
If they make you install it, you CAN uninstall it after the setup is
made.
If your modem has router (most likely), the guy will tell you what to
do to set that. Then you give him user/pass for the main account -
this is the new account, of course.
Takes all of 10min - with the right guy :-)
