Wayne,
Thanks for this information:
But:
It seems that to use this facility I must uninstall all the other system
security applications So I will then have to trust Microsoft to produce, and
maintain a product to keep malware from the OS that they sold me!
This not only seems to be charging me extra for them to do what they should
have already done, but I will then have to trust them to deal with problems
as openly, well publicised and fast as the (now) competitor organisations
did !
But ... hold on .. won't this tend to put those organisations out of
business, so I'll have to trust Microsoft to produce a secure and safe to
use system without competition, or legal enforcement?
Ok, stepping away from that consideration for a while,
Will this facility provide a backup that will allow me to rebuild a system
( New OS install onto a replacement hard drive) and get my prior working
environment automatically restored.
I'm asking about that particularly because I have just had to replace
Windows XP Pro on a system that had been fixed by installing an image of an
unauthorised 'corporate' version, rather than the proper OEM version as per
the sticker on the case.
That invalid install having wiped the recovery information from the hard
drive, using the entire drive for the 'restore' image and the user then
having set-up all their software and applications, including appropriate
specialisation/configuring.
It was then discovered that they had not been running windows update -
because it wouldn't run for that licence code
------------------------
The help I got from MS when asking if it was possible to reset the system to
the correct OEM id, rather than have to do a re-install was -
Not possible, and if I wanted advice and/or help with providing
documentation of the installed 'pirated' software, I could use the pay £50
to speak to their technician facility
Strangely, I decided not to pay MS to help them deal with the offender,
especially as they seem more interested in confronting the defrauded
'corporate' organisation than dealing with the 'maintenance/fixit'
organisation that having been paid to fix the PC, installed the unauthorised
software.
Having later examined the system, it was evident that there were serious
problems with the installed OS, so I had to do a full install anyhow, but
the response from MS doesn't lead me to believe that it is safe to ditch the
other system protection software and rely on Microsoft to produce a facility
that is safe and secure to use.
Then again, their response is not much different from that of Symantec's
support call centre staff -
Symantec have already got your money
I've got a script
You're paying for the call ( and I'm making something from that while
you're on hold )
You've got a problem
I can't see any connection between your problem and my reading of the
script
( Dmn user won't do a reboot again,
and claims to have uninstalled and reinstalled already..
now what can tell them to do)
Oh! yes I've got a facility for sending out 'responses'
I'll tell them I'll pass it on to a technician who will contact them
Yes this (RANDOM()) generated response will do.
Now back to my MP3 of 'The Evil Dead'
