Assuming it's true, google is doing it to block the search sites who use
adwords etc to make a fast buck... it's highly irritating when a site full
of google links is a top result and they often do one year at a time to see
how well it does.
(many/most of my sites are 1 yr renewals but it doesn't seem to have hurt my
positioning any... but then, my sites are all legit.)
