It would appear that IE7 no longer contains Windows Explorer functionality
as it did in prior versions. It's less part of the Windows OS and more just
an Internet browser.

"Be careful what you ask for..." comes to mind.

We've always had a problem lauching control.exe with runas because Windows
won't start another copy of explorer.exe with different credentials.
Control.exe isn't what runs when you see the Control Panel - starting
control.exe with no arguments just initiates a new Windows Explorer window
with a certain view.

I've used the runas iexplore.exe hack to modify printer connections in the
past, but looks like it's back to logout/login for that job.

Subject: IE7 and a limited XP Home account

With IE6 from my limited account, I could launch it with admin
credentials, and then type "Control Panel" in the address bar and the
Panel opens with admin rights. Comes in handy without having to
acctually switch accounts.

However, since I decided to try out IE7, this little trick doesn't
work. I can get a Control Panel to open, but only if I launch IE7
normally -- no "Run as..." -- and then it opens in a separate
window. If I launch IE7 with "Run as..." and type "Control Panel" it
opens a separate My Computer window. Drilling down to the System32
folder in this window, I can launch the Control app only to find the
window doesn't have admin rights.

I also tried creating a shortcut on the desktop for Control Panel,
but it won't launch if I right-click and select "Run as..." or even
if I add runas to the shortcut command line. Or if I start a command
prompt with "Run as..." and type "control". I *can*, however, launch
individual panel applets from this admin command prompt and they each
have full admin rights.

So, long story short, any ideas on why the Control Panel itself won't
launch with different credentials? Any ideas for a work around?
