When you say fn-12 do you mean Function-F12 ?

If so, most laptop "Function" key behavior is controlled by the BIOS.  I'd
poke around the BIOS setup to see if it can be changed there.

You might also try Shift-Function-F12 or Ctrl-Function-F12 or
Alt-Function-F12.

I don't have a "when I press the sleep button" on that pane -- I have 
"when I close the cover" and "when I push the power button".  I don't 
really want to make the power button do anything other than power-down 
the system, so what I've done, since the fn-12 seems to be pretty 
hardwired to do "hibernate" is make the close-cover [which I used to have 
hibernate] do a standby.  It'd be nice if I could mess with that [e.g, 
make the otherwise-unused fn-11 do standby, but it appears that that's 
not possible...
