Bernie, I know exactly how frustrating it can be, even with an M-AUDIO
audiophile sound card and the Audacity software, in position!!

I have a high-end system (with turntable) and have taken on this project
of converting some of my well loved LPs to CD - it is time consuming and
very boring - but at least it gets rid of those horrid breakfast
sounds:~)
