Microsoft is investigating new public reports of limited "zero-day" attacks using a vulnerability in Microsoft Word XP and Microsoft Word 2003. In order for this attack to be carried out, a user must first open a malicious Word document attached to an e-mail or otherwise provided to them by an attacker. Microsoft will continue to investigate the public reports to help provide additional guidance for customers as necessary.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/919637.mspx Since (Almost) everyone uses some form of Microsoft Word and or Outlook I find this security advisory most important becuase of its ease of rendering any PC being vulnerable to the "Zero-day" attack. I don't know about weather or not other word procs such as Openoffice, Star Office, Corel WordPerfect are susseptible to this attack via their own respective e-mail clients. The attacks infiltrate the Outlook e-mail client through its default editor Microsoft Word. The instructions in the advisory tell how you can turn off Outlooks default editor (Word) and use an alternate editor of your choice such as Notepad, Write and a host of others such as WordPerfect, Openoffice ect.
