I meant, don't use the WAN port on your son's router. The
ethernet cable goes from a LAN port on your switch to a LAN
port on your son's router. The path between your son's router
and his laptop is wireless. Chances are, it will work right out of
the box without any configuration, but as others have pointed
out, you may have to turn off DHCP in your son's router.

run another cable to his laptop (and it works fine), but he doesn't want
to be tethered. What do you mean "don't use the WAN port"? I go from my
cable modem to the WAN port on the router. Is that bad?
