As far as reliability goes, some of it is due to bad design,
but the 'luck of the draw' also comes into play.
I bought my kids nearly identical HP Pavilion laptops
two years ago, and one has been mostly trouble-free,
while the other has had both the hard drive and
motherboard changed out twice (under warranty).
I used to be a fan of Dell Inspiron laptops, but after
they hit the two year mark, various things began going
wrong (keyboard, graphics chip). The laptop I've been
using for the past seven months is a Compaq Presario,
and it has been trouble-free so far (knocks on wood...).
