I just found out that when the Num Lock key is ON, the behavior I described is
the result. I had never used Num Lock, so the behavior was a mystery to me. A
friend stopped by & I asked him and he said "you have your Num Lock key ON".
Now I know :).
I thought the keyboard was going wacky.
