Guest accounts on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=300489 Printer and Fax stuff: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c11621675.mspx > I would like to share that system's printer with the other computers > around her [my and my wife's laptops and my wife's desktop, at the > least]. > > So far, I cannot find a way to do that that doesn't seem to require that > I go through a dialogue that asks me for my admin password. Or [more likely] do I have something amiss. This may help: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/printershare.m spx If I recall correctly, what I ended up was one of the following: 1. disabled simplie file sharing on the Windows XP Pro system for other reasons, but then requires finer grained permissions. 2. Under Properties->Security for the printer, added entries for Everyone, ANONYMOUS LOGIN, and Guests, and gave them all max. permissions. [See below, I think Everyone is the important one]. 3. Under Local Security Policies, Local Policies, User Rights Assignment enabled "Access this computer from the network" for Administrators, Users, Everyone. I think that "Everyone" is important there. Under Security Options: "Guest Account Enabled". There's also a "Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users", which I have disabled, but looks interesting. You might try these actions one at a time, to see which is truly necessary. I was quite frustrated at the time, and was completely comfortable with the shotgun approach. I do recall that things were really troublesome in a mixed Win2K, Win98, WinXP environment, but fortunately those days are behind us. In any event, I think that Everyone access is the important element above. Somehow it is working ... my wife can print from WinXP home laptop onto the printer attached to my WinXP Pro system, and I'm running with SFP sharing disabled. -- ---------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is your picture included in the Official Win-Home List Members Profiles Page? http://www.besteffort.com/winhome/Profiles.html If not, write to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
