In addition to the "fixboot" command, it is sometimes
necessary to also use the "fixmbr" command.

My laptop has decided not to boot and shows an error message "boot partition missing or corrupt", I believe this is a bug issue but am not sure how to rectify it. Re-install windows does not solve the prob, nor does reformatting.

Nope, a reinstall or reformat will not fix a "boot partition missing or corrupt" as neither touches the machines ability to boot the HD. You must use the original XP CD & boot with that then press R & go to the Recovery Console. In the Recovery Console type "fixboot".
