I'm going to suggest the opposite...
Instead of trying to "change the world", (or "fix" everyone elses'
machine to play "your" file), why not compress (re-code) the original
AVI file using something like "Microsoft Windows Media Video 9"
using Virtualdub, after installing the Windows CodecPack from K Lite.)

Note: I get the full version (still free).
This someimes makes the (avi video) file 1/10th the size at the
same time, (good for moving around and archiving), while increasing the
"portability" across machines..,.
This means the PowerPoint Show will have to be "re-done",
but you would be fixing things on your end...

The video plays fine using media player on the target machine, which
I'm sure runs WinXP. I'm assuming that the version of PP is quite up
to date. The video however does not play within PP on that specific
PC.
Not to confuse things too much, I tried playing the video on my Win98
and Office97 PC and all works fine.
Here's the question:
Are there any filters that have to installed for PP to grab the
decoder, which is already present on a given PC?
The decoder (codec) is there, because media player can use it and
play to video.
