Hi Carle, The connection swapping was done with the same result. There was absolutely no change in terms of windows being able to detect the CD-ROM drive.

A sudden problem as you describe sounds very much like a hardware failure. Possibly in the motherboard itself. I'd start by checking the cable connections for the CD drive, especially at the motherboard. And try swapping the CD drive and hard drive connections (if both are IDE) or place the CD drive on the other motherboard IDE connector.
