In XP, an "overwrite install" (re-install to the same path) isn't the same as a "repair install".
I have done many repair installs on XP and never had to re-install any add-on software. I've never had it make things worse. I have NEVER successfully done an XP over-write and have always had to resort to a complete format + install of everything. However, I always keep a BASIC backup. XP-pro + Office2003 + utilities always needed (Acronis True-Image etc) specifically for this purpose if all else fails. I must add that my two weekly backup is also quite useful for situations such as this. If it workd last week it must work this week unless some hardware has gone south.....
