Hi All,

Thanks to all who helped and contributed to this effort. Wanted to
share the results.

I got the brand new Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop for $1000, less $300
rebate. Had all the works in terms of I/O, but hardly any usable
software. Lots of "try to buy" bloatware.

My main concern was to create an early backup of HD, in case
something got messed up with WinXP. I'm not all that used to it.

In the end I pulled the 2.5inch HD, which was SATA 5400 and connected
to a friends PC, which has SATA port. Backed up the crucial stuff to
DVD, which was about half of the 8gb prelaoded stuff.

Called tech support, which I was told was in Atlanta. Answer was
prompt and the guy reasonably helpful and friendly. With tricky
questions, I was sent to level II support, which took a while to get.
Again friendly and helpful, but problem with understanding (maybe
Level II is not in Atlanta).

My main concern again, was backing up. Lenovo laptops have some
imaging software provided - guy could not tell me whose sofware they
use, but it can backup either to another place on the HD, or CD/DVD
burner.

Was told that Lenovo has some hard coded (must be ROM or the first
backup disk) graphic screen which allows recovery, even with total
crash of windows. After basic setup I did the backup to DVD. Took
almost an hour. Took 2 DVDs.

This was after I removed some of the junk, like Norton and few
useless things that are preloaded, but updated the backup utility.

Few pluses on Lenovo - support in many parts of the world. Quick
response from TS guys (in Atlanta), good HD backup utility (will
see).

Regards,

Rich
