The drive is a Maxtor. Maxtor powermax and or maxblast 4 do not work on the drive. They return similar error messages that I previously outlined.

If you can determine the manufacturer of the drive, you would be better
off using the manufacturers utilities and tools.  Most, if not all
these bypass the BIOS and talk directly to the drive.

Some, not all, require that you use a bootable floppy disk.

However the BIOS has to be able to see the drive if you want to use the
normal "Fdisk and Format" tools.

The fact that its a Dell shouldn't make any difference to the tools that
you use !  However if your machine uses a hidden partition and it gets
damaged or removed, you probably will have to use the Dell tools to
restore it !
