All my worry was for nothing. I set the SATA to IDE mode in the BIOS and WinXP installed without a hitch, and without using F6 for RAID drivers. Once Windows was installed, I loaded the chipset drivers which installed the SATA drivers for the hard drive. System is running great. Core2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz, on Asus P5B, 2 GB Corsair 677 MHz DDR2, 320MB Seagate SATA HD, all in a beautiful all aluminum Lian Li case.

The external SATA connector does not run on the Intel P965 chipset, it is on a JMicron chip connector installed by the motherboard mfg. to accommodate the IDE connector (for optical drive) and RAID. It is supposed to run at 300, but I don't know for sure - not using.

If you do decide to put a (NON-USB) floppy drive in the system it may
require you to use a single head cable
(Days of annoying experience trying to get a driver loaded from floppy with
prior system where the system would just not recognise floppy drives that
were working perfectly in their normal PC other systems)

And do enjoy the SATA 2 speed -
Please let me/us know if the external connection also runs at 300

I've been doing some more research and I think I can clarify and have an
answer. First of all, I do not plan to put a floppy drive in the new
machine, but have one that could be used if the F6 thing was required. I
found that the CD supplied with the board has a makedisk utility for
putting
the RAID drivers on a floppy. There was no mention of SATA drivers.

But the answer I found on Intel's site in FAQs about the P965 chipset. The
BIOS of the motherboard has a configuration setting for SATA Mode: IDE,
SATA, or RAID. I think this statement from Intel is my answer:

. IDE mode uses a native Microsoft* driver and does not require the F6
installation method.
. SATA and RAID mode both use the IntelĀ® Matrix Storage Manager and
require the F6 installation method.

So I hope this is what will happen when I set up the new system.

Thanks for your help.
