I have no idea what causes this trouble, but there are any number of
standard diagnostic measures you can start applying if your'e intent on
solving the problem.

1. What makes a machine that has problems different from one that doesn't?
a. Installed software?
b. BHO's and ActiveX plugins installed in IE?
c. List of installed QFEs? (get QFECHECK, MSKB 282784)

2. Delete temporary internet files.

3. Disable browser 3rd party extensions.

4. Check event viewer for things logged at about the same time that Word
fails to start.

5. Test with a user who has never logged into a problem machine before. If
it's user-profile-specific, a new user won't see the problem.

I am guessing that you're telling me that adding the site to trusted sites
had no effect on the problem.

Subject: Re: IE embedded links for Word docs fail

Ah, so true... I need my other pill bottle.

The web page has links that used to open Word doc files when double
clicked. Now the users get a fast flash of a screen change and no file
displays. Nada.

I added this site to the trusted sites list via a remote registry edit
since IE is locked down considerably.

BTW, this is XP Pro SP2 and IE 6, SP2
