Well, the suggestion to purge the queue seemed to be the winner.
While there was no true print queue, there was a spool directory .
(We do a share on the spool directory for jobs to be sent to the printer, but
the jobs go from
the release station to the printer via IP Printing)
We found it full of jobs including one very large one.
We purged them all and all is good.
