Actually, I found the HOWTOs pretty confusing, especially the "CD Burning
HOWTO" which everyone seems to point to. Too much detail and much of
non-applicable to the common IDE-ATAPI drive.

But...there are two articles in the Sep 2000 Linux Gazette that made
everything quite clear for me. I can now burn CD-Rs easily, plus I can read
CD-ROMs in the normal fashion from the same unit. Unlike the canonical CD
Burning HOWTO, the method shown in these articles didn't involve recompiling
the kernel. (Actually, that isn't especially difficult, but it can be
time-consuming.)
