Ok, I'm the one who claimed that his parallel port scanner worked under
win4lin. Here is what I did, step by step.

1. As root, install a direct parallel port:

Launch 'winsetup', press the buttons 'System wide win4lin
administration', 'View/Create/Modify Device definitions', 'Custom'.

Now go to the drop down menu called 'Token name' and choose a type of
port. lpx1 and lpx2 are unidirectional while ecp1 and ecp2 are
bi-directional. Most of us will want ecp1.

Make it usable by all.

On the 'configuration' drop-down box, choose the 'IO Port' and make sure
it has the correct addresses for the port you are actually using. For
ecp1 it is 378-37c and 778-779. IIRC, I didn't have to insert this, they
were already inserted. The only thing I had to change was the 'Usable
by' from 'root' to 'all'.

Save the changes and quit 'winsetup'

2. As a normal user, include the direct parallel port access in your
win4lin setup:

Launch 'winsetup', go to 'Personal win4lin session configuration: win',
'devices'. There, under 'Other devices', the device you setup up before
as root should now be available (in the ecp1 case, it's called 'ECP/EPP
Parallel Port 1'). Press the little square to make it active, save the
changes and 'quit winsetup'

3. install the sofware for your pp hardware under win4lin (eg, your
scanner drivers for windows)

4. END

After installing my scanner drivers and twain, the scanner was available
from other progs (photoshop, acrobat, etc). The scanned image is
perfect, but the scanning processes is a bit slower, the light head
doesn't move so smooth as under windows. I suppose this is because the
drivers can't grab the system resources as it does under native windows
- under native windows not even the mouse moves while I'm scanning.

So, to make it short: as root make the ecp port usable by all; as normal
user, make the ecp port active.

Good luck to all,

Paulo
