win9x also allows you to move and resize the start bar. to move it,
click/hold a blank spot on the bar and drag it any of the other three
sides/top/bottom of the screen, then let go.
to resize the bar (even to a one-pixel strip), put the mouse right over
the edge of the bar closest to the middle of the screen, and drag to
increase or decrese size. be careful if you decrease to a single-pixel
strip, it takes patience to be able to expand it again.
finally, you can set the start bar to autohide (rightclick/properties).
any of these would technically keep the start bar from interfering
with your work.
