I've noticed that disk intensive activity (mysql and file
moves on big directories) can be noticeably slower when running
the win4lin kernel even when "win" is not running (750MHz Pentium III
with EIDE running Mandrake 7.0 with win4lin prebuilt kernel).
I haven't looked into this much to try to nail down a cause (such
as difference in hdparm or something) but if this is something
that is generally true (perhaps to integrate windows file access
with Linux) I doubt the entire Linux community (i.e. those not
running win4lin) would want to be stuck with it.
