well as I understand it Merge was originally developed (by Platinum,
founded by Popek of Popek & Goldberg virtual-machine fame, IIRC) for SCO
Unix - code authors include David Peet, John Nunnely I think. 

Win4lin is just Merge for Linux & win 9x, but Merge is NOT public domain
-  and indeed I think Trelos, and now presumably Netraverse, own the IP,
and are issuing updates, based their work on win4lin.
