Thanks for the replies.  It turned out the file system (Linux) was damaged.  It
took several passes of manually started fsck, but the Linux system is pretty
much back to normal now, and removing and reinstalling the win4lin rpm restored
full functioning of windows.  I lost a little bit of data from the application
I was running, but it was mostly backed up in other parts of the linux file
system.  It was a pain and I lost some valuable time, but overall I think it
was a lot less damaging than if it had been a native windows system.
