Make sure that you have write permission to $HOME/.merge/win.cfw

What might have happened was that at some point you used "su"
to become root, but $HOME was still set to your normal user account,
and then used a Win4Lin utility that happened set up the
configuration files.  For root $HOME is normally "/root".

It is normally safest to use "su -" because that really makes sure
that $HOME is set to the root user's home directory.  Also
make sure that you own the directory $HOME/.merge and 
all the files in it.
