At this point it's pretty much a non-issue as win4lin doesn't support
anything but win9x. Not even win me for now. XP and 2000 are both based
on the NT kernel, which is a significantly different that it's doubtful
win4lin could support any nt-based windows without significant changes,
changes that would make it more like vmware, as far as speed goes.

Of course, Office XP will probably run on win98 and hence win4lin, but
online install shouldn't be a biggy, especially with win4lin 3.0. An
advantage I see is that the win4lin virtual machine is pretty constant,
no matter what the real machine is running on. Thus you could just move
it to another machine and XP wouldn't know the difference.

Hopefully they'll figure out some way to support windows nt-based windows,
as win9x is being pushed out by ms pretty fast. Thus win4lin's lifespan
will be shortened significantly if we can only run win9x. Interesting
things the future holds. It will be interesting to see how the wine
project develops as well.

I'll save my feelings about compulsory on-line registration for another
day. Except to say that MS is pretty short-sighted to require an internet
connection (although that is definitely what will happen -- great control
over piracy), since many, many people around the world are not yet
connected. I can see a day when MS will not only require internet access
for installation, but for every program invocation as well. With .net's
centrallized storage, not even your own documents will reside on your
machine, but on a "secure" MS-controlled server. Total access control
will be granted by special pay-per-use or pay-per-document licensing
arrangement, all supported by the DCMA and the UCITA or whatever it's
called. By then, I hope we all revolt.

cheers,
Michael
