well, this has been frustrating.  for 2.4.2 or 2.4.3, it seems i can
have one of two choices:

a) XFS

or

b) Win4Lin

Basically, the files I can access from SGI (snapshot of 2.4.3),
does *not* match the sources I got from Mandrake (various system
routines with differing numbers of arguments, etc...)  So, until
XFS is folded into the standard distros (if ever), I guess it's
back to reiserfs :(
