for what it's worth, i took a stock 2.4.3 kernel (from kernel.org),
did:

make mrproper
make xconfig
  (other non-win4lin stuff)
patch -p1 < PATCHFILE
make oldconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

....

did a reboot, ran installer and everything went without a hitch.
