That is correct--the postinstall did not run (see my followup). I was
confused because the symptoms were a bit different than with version 2.
I did not try using 'alien -c' to see if it would convert the
postinstall script, since this did not work for me when I upgraded to
version 2. It was not necessary to remove the old version first; dpkg
takes care of that. After I ran the script, I just typed 'win' and
everything was working as before.
After reading many of the horror stories on the list about version 3, I
was pleasantly surprised that the installation went fairly smoothly.
The only difficulty (other than not running the postinstall script) was
locating where the installer had placed the rpm file so I could use
alien to convert it.
It might save a few folks some grief if the rpm were made available
directly, as was done with version 2, instead of requiring that the
installer program be run (yes, I realize that someone went to a lot of
trouble to create the nice installer, but IMHO it is a hindrance,
particularly to an experienced Linux user). It did handle the license
code nicely, however (which was a big problem for many people with
version 2, although that probably could have been avoided).
I guess I have now run out of excuses for not upgrading to a 2.4
kernel.
Thanks,
Bob
