Hi again.
It is too early to say conclusively, but I have compiled up and
installed 2.4.5 kernel. The performance here feels much better, both in
win4lin and linux (it feels like there is the performance boost I saw
when I first installed 2.4.x on my other machine, and part of the reason
I have been hanging out for 2.4 support).
The DOS shell comes up immediately, and the printer window is also
reasonably fast (well... as fast as it is under native losedows).
Everything else I have tried has also felt snappy.
I suggest those others with this problem to also try 2.4.5 and pass on
the results. I used the 2.4.4 patch. The only unsuccessful hunk was the
"extra version" -win4lin.
