you may be on to something here.  i did 'swapoff -a' and then
launched an fwin session.  i need more time to be sure, but i
ran quicken, eudora, quicken again, hearts, IE5.5, and gravity,
and noticed no stalls.  mike, is there any chance that the memory
used for win4lin for win98 RAM is allocated in such a way as to be
swapped out preferentially to other RAM?
