Further to my original post, I realise that I forgot to mention the
following:
The ethertap interface has to be configured to do arp. Otherwise things
don't work. Thus, when configuring the tap0 interface with ifconfig, the
following is required:
# ifconfig tap0 192.168.250.1 arp
It's also worth bearing in mind that sharing files and printers won't work
properly. You can connect to other people's shares, however (provided
you're using a WINS server on the real subnet or have samba configured on
the local private subnet to do proxy name lookups, or you connect by
typing in the target name rather than browsing).
