Two reasons (IIRC): (1) I didn't want the private network packets leaking
out onto the real ethernet (as they might do if you set up a private
network alias). (2) I was aware that there were some issues with VNET and
aliases so I thought I'd try to avoid them. Perhaps these have been fixed
now?
Having said the above, I realise there's actually another reason. Since
I'm doing this on a laptop, I wanted the W4L configuration to be static
but be able to use whatever network (and default gateway) is set up by PPP
or DHCP (as appropriate) without reconfiguring W4L.
