On my 1GHZ PIII 256M RAM benchmarking (winbench and others) showed at least
the "CPU" in windows98 to be running at native speed. Memory and Disk speed
were slower but still satisfying.. runs faster than my wife's Celeron
500Mhz. I've seen a lot of talk about win4lin 3.0 being slow - for me it's
actually faster and more reliable than win4lin 2.0 and crashes less than
native windows...

What desktop/window manager are you running? If it's Gnome or KDE, both
require 128M RAM just for themselves, especially with Mandrake 8. Using
Win4Lin (with it's 64M RAM requirements) would, I think, just send your
machine into heavy swap usage, which would account for the slow speed. A RAM
upgrade would be your best solution, especially with RAM so cheap now (at
least, it's VERY cheap here in the U.S).
