[Winona Online Democracy]

Hello,

I have very little concern for crime and those sorts of problems in Winona- I just don't see tourists coming for the Shakespeare Festival and Globe Alpha station as any sort of bad element... However I do worry about traffic here. My main worry being all of our uncontrolled intersections. After moving here from the Twin Cities I was shocked at how most of our intersections don't have stop signs. It wasn't until a few years ago that stop signs were put at the intersections by Madison school! I was also very surprised at how many streets don't explain the whole "alternate side parking" for the winter months. In the Twin Cities every block has a sign explaining the winter snow emergncy rules- here you have to see it on the way into town to understand. That's just not right! We definitely need more signage if we are going to become a tourist community.

By the way, I would like to join my husband in congratulating our city council, mayor, city manager and other creative minds in going forward with these ideas. I think Will Kitchen has done a fabulous job in letting others know how wonderful Winona is. I hope the NASA/Globe people agree. It's a tremendous opportunity for our community, and I think a tremendous opportunity for these other creative and scientific projects.

Clay---these are good questions... do any of the planners involved in these events have impact statements or projections to show consideration of the positive futures and any attended down sides and how they might be mitigated?

[Winona Online Democracy]Some great stuff is coming down the road, or 'up the river' for Winona
county. Things like the Great River Shakespeare Festival to start in summer
'04, the Grand Excursion flotilla of riverboats up the Mississippi also in
summer of '04, the possible Globe project that, if successful, will make us
Earth Station Alpha for a NASA educational project, and more. There are
many opportunities for businesses, schools, churches, volunteers, interest
groups, and government to thrive with these activities.

As people who like to take part in shaping your own destinies (hence
involvement in experiments like e-democracy), what concerns do you have
about seeing tens of thousands of people streaming into the area for these
events? Do you think we're prepared for it? Are you concerned about a
possible increase in crime (although normally you don't associate pilgrims
to a Shakespeare production with hardened criminals, I suppose greater
numbers do attract greater risk...)?
