My 2 cents:
I had a similar experience that Terry Hyle had. I lived the first 34 years
of my life in St. Louis, MO, where uncontrolled intersections were rare. We
rented a house at Mark and Olmstead when we moved to Winona, and it took me
at least 2 weeks to realize that the intersections in that neighborhood were
uncontrolled. Here I was zipping along with my baby in the back seat
assuming I had the right of way. Lucky for me, the traffic near my home was
light. I have an excellent driving record; in fact, I have never had more
than a parking ticket. I would call myself a very attentive driver. But
those kinds of intersections were foreign to me, and, happily, I realized
the problem early. But, like Kirsten, I will yield rather than be
"shmooshed."

Signs would help, but slowing down and yielding (even if you are "right")
would help, too. I've asked this question before in a different context: Is
it more important to be right or to be respectful?
