[Winona Online Democracy] It has been interesting to read the reaction to the uncontrolled intersections in Winona. As home owners who for 28 years have lived between the 5th Street and 4th Street intersections on Chestnut (both intersections are uncontrolled and have a large building close to the sidewalk) we have seen it all. We have had trees knocked down. fences demolished, cars in livingrooms, and large utility poles distroyed all because of these uncontrolled intersections. We have seen many cars distroyed and way to many ambulances called. As locals on this block we all know you NEVER go through these intersections without stopping first. These two intersections must produce a large number of crashes per year..it has gotten to be a standard to expect as least 10 to 15 in a given summer. Since this neighborhood has started to be the home of many families with growing children it certainly would be a shame if one of those children would become hurt for lack of a control at the intersection. Lets not allow one more child to become hurt or die because a driver doesn't know the danger in that crossing. Will it take yet another young person to be killed to wake up our city leaders to the danger our community invites by not taking responsibility for the control of the traffic patterns? It only takes one driver to cause a major tragedy and a stop sign to avoid it.
