Joy,
I know exactly how you feel. Our first house in Winona was on W 7th, about 5 blocks from campus, and at first it was lovely. Then our next door neighbor died and a realtor bought the house and rented it out to students. Our neighbor had owned a business on the other side and when he became ill that was turned into student apartments as well. We didn't feel it was appropriate for our young children to be awakened in the middle of the night by intoxicated students shouting obscenities... So we moved.
On the other hand we have had many wonderful relationships with WSU students as babysitters, coaches, and swim teachers. I've worked with groups of them as volunteers. I've employed at least half a dozen as interns and they've been competent and wonderful to get to know. I think this town doesn't appreciate enough what these students do as volunteers and low paid workers. They truly are a resource for the community.

However, it seems rather harsh to criticize only college students for being very loud and giddy when they are tipsy. Over use of alcohol can cause anyone, regardless of their age or educational status to be more vocal than they normally are. Why does every alcohol or bar-related issue in Winona always end up dumping on the college students? Dean Lanz
Well Dean I hate to tell you this but I blame Winona State students because in my case it is Winona State students. I merely speak from my experience. I don't know the situation with other bars in town and I would be interested to know. Like I said in my original statement I live in-between a bar and Winona State just but 1 block between the two each other. I don't want to bad mouth students, if I don't have to (I myself just a few days ago graduated from U of M) however if the shoe fits.
