From the story I read and from knowing something about the two boys involved, I had the impression that they were not being consistently chased.  The first police car that was chasing a reported stolen car lost track of the boys.  Later another police car spotted the car speeding down lake drive.  They apparently attempted to negotiate a sharp curve at 70 to 80 mph.  The momentum of the car at that speed did not allow the car to turn.  Thus, it went straight ahead and hit two trees.

As you said, a real tragedy.  I hope that all juveniles might take notice of the risk of speeding and the fact that a loss of control is the biggest risk of high speeds.

A real tragedy.  I could not tell from the article in the WDN whether the police car was actually chasing at 80 mph, or whether the kids got spooked and took off at 80 mph leaving the police behind.  Any further details?

Of course, second-guessing after the fact is easy, but also appropriate when our public servants are involved.  What would have happened if the police had not chased them?  What if they had caused some other accident or run someone else down and the police had given up a mile back?  Then we'd be scolding the police too.  A tough choice and a real tragedy any way you look at it.
