From the story I read and from knowing something about the two
boys involved, I had the impression that they were not being consistently
chased. The first police car that was chasing a reported stolen car lost
track of the boys. Later another police car spotted the car speeding down
lake drive. They apparently attempted to negotiate a sharp curve at 70 to
80 mph. The momentum of the car at that speed did not allow the car to
turn. Thus, it went straight ahead and hit two trees.
As you said, a real tragedy. I hope that all juveniles
might take notice of the risk of speeding and the fact that a loss of control is
the biggest risk of high speeds.
