The very sad truth is that in our community, there are people, some of them children who have no say in the matter, who have no permanent address. They are homeless. The district has a duty to educate all children, even those without a permanent address.
I don't know if this applies to the student in question, but I do know as a fact that students have attended WSHS without benefit of a permanent address. Several years ago, one of my children's friends lived with us for a time, to finish out the term when his family was forced to relocate because of money problems. He was a good student, who, because of his family's circumstances, was forced to change schools many times during his high school career. He graduated from a high school in another community. Despite his family's difficulties, he is happily enrolled in a 4 year university, with plans to go on to graduate school. Because of his determination and abilities, I am certain he will have a bright future.
Certainly, there are more students than we read about in the papers who attend school regularly despite some fairly large obstacles. I do not know the student mentioned in the article or his circumstances. I do know that the propensity towards violence can be found in homes of all economic circumstances in this city, as well as throughout our nation.

I am very intrigued with today's Winona Daily News front page article regarding
the Senior High "lockdown".
One paragraph of the article stated "The student, identified as a 15-year old
sophomore boy with no permanent address, was taken to the LEC" etc.
Can anyone please explain to me as a Winona District #861 taxpayer why we
would be schooling students with "no permanent address"?
Also, how many of these students are there presently in our District?
Where did he come from in a car to school and not a bus, etc.?
My curiosity is very peaked regarding this matter.
