[Winona Online Democracy] (This is my third attempt to send a message like this. I have been trying since Saturday. Unfortunately for me, I have had to start over every time. Fortunately for WOD, each time I have to start over, my original message becomes smaller and smaller.)
;-> Regarding Wal Mart and existing Winona Wages. It is true that Winona had a pre-existing problem with low wage paying jobs before Wal Mart entered the picture. Wal Mart is not the cause of that problem. That is a seperate problem. Even if Wal Mart was kept out of Winona, the existing problem would still exist. The existing problem needs to be addressed as well. Still though, while it in undeniable that Wal Mart is not the cause of all the world's problems, it's also undeniable that Wal Mart will only make the problem worst. It will put even more downward pressure on wages and make the middle class disappear even faster. Picture a teeter totter with 5 kids on one side and 1 kid on the other side. The side with one kid represents a decent paying job. The side with 5 kids represent low paying jobs. The teeter tooter is way out of balance. Now imagine if a 500 pound gorilla comes along and sits down on the low wage paying side of the teeter totter. Question: What kind of wages and does a 500 pound gorilla offer? Answer: Whatever it wants. The Winona City Council has an option to keep the 500 pound gorilla out of town. I agree with Terry Angst that it's not government's job to protect locally owned businesses from competition. But it's also not government's job to take public tax dollars to create land and build roads for the world's largest corporation. The normal and healthy "churning" of the business cycle is one thing, corporate welfare is another. Hiding behind a laissez faire arguement is a thin defense at best.
