[Winona Online Democracy]

This is my second attempt to send this, so if it is a double post, I apologize.

Thinking down the road a few years, suppose that Wal Mart comes into town and is very successful, and in the process, we lose such businesses as Econo Foods, Shopko, KMart, maybe even a couple of other grocery stores. Although I couldn't afford the $35 fee to hear Ken Stone speak, I believe that is what he thought would likely happen. If it does, and we lose those businesses in Winona, what will competition in Winona look like then? Who will compete against Wal Mart?

And, if Wal Mart is not successful in Winona (and it does fail in some other cities, including Laramie, Wyoming, a city many ways similar to Winona), what will Winona look like then? What businesses, including groceries will still be in town?

I honestly do not know the answer to this question, but why did HyVee chose to locate along the highway, near to the west end of town instead of near Target? Did they ever attempt to purchase land in that prime east end location? If not, why?

I don't know if the Garvin Heights overlook is open right now, but if it is, I invite everyone to go up and look over the city. Whenever my family has visitors, from other parts of the US or from all over the world, we always go to Garvin Heights and show off the view. The unanimous verdict is and enthusiastic and awed "Wow"". Early this past fall, we took a visitor to Garvin Heights again, with the same expression uttered. I noticed ow prominent the new WSU apartments are on the Winona landscape from Garvin Heights. How will our view look when we have a 213,000 sq. foot big box, surrounded by acres of asphalt (nicely landscaped as it may be) on the east end? Will it be worth the nickle a package we save on Hamburger Helper or Fruit of the Looms? It won't for me.

I think that it is the responsibility of city government to look at what is best for the city of Winona, both in the short and in the long term. In my opinion, Wal Mart does not offer more to the city in either the long or short term.
