When the United Way announced this "compromise" a couple years ago, my friend Mark Metzler, who was on the United Way board at the time, expressed his extreme disgust with the decision to me. While I don't remember his exact quote, it was something to the effect that the United Way failed to step up to the plate and do the right thing.
Basically, what this compromise does is allows the Untied Way to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the discrimination that is inherent in the Scouts policy.
The scouts can claim there is no discrimination going on, but the national policy on gay scout leaders is quite clear and it is my understanding that local councils do not have the authority to act in a manner that is not in accordance with this policy.
A concomitant question I would like to ask is this'
Does a contributor to the UW have the opportunity to state which organizations he/she does not want her/his contribution to help fun?
